Minister Catherine Martin welcomes publication of Arts & Culture recovery taskforce report

BACK

Green Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD, has today welcomed the publication of “Life Worth Living”, the Report of the Arts and Culture Recovery Taskforce.

Chaired by Clare Duignan, the Arts and Culture Recovery Taskforce has a central role to play in efforts to ensure this vital sector is well positioned to recover from the impacts of the Covid-19 crisis, and the report contains a number of recommendations which build on the substantial supports secured for the sector by Minister Martin in the July Stimulus and Budget 2021.

Among the recommendations included in the report is a proposal to establish a pilot scheme of Universal Basic Income for artists and live performers, along with recommendations to address mental health and wellbeing, social inclusion, policy and planning, taxation and financial provision. The report also proposes supports around education and training, technology, and community development – reimagining our public spaces to host outdoor arts and live performance events.

Welcoming the report today, Minister Catherine Martin said: “Ireland has produced some of the world’s most valued artists and performers, and during these dark days of Covid-19, our artists still strive to do that which they love so much: to create. The Arts and Culture Recovery Taskforce report that we launch here today sheds light on a dire crisis that the sector now faces – incomes have disappeared; performers have no audiences; cultural spaces, concert halls and galleries remain empty and the lights have been turned off for the live events sector.

“The Taskforce considered nearly 40 submissions and representations from practitioners across all sectors and I am very grateful to all of the members for their energy, commitment, and insights. The ten key recommendations within the report will be considered by Government when finalising the national recovery plan in the weeks ahead, and I intend to see that the arts, culture and live events sectors are represented from the outset and this vital part of Irish society, a sector which helps to define who we are as a nation, is secured and woven into our national recovery.”
