Budget 2019 Does Not Serve the Housing Needs of People with Disabilities

Speaking on Budget 2019, Green Party Spokesperson for Equality Una Power welcomed allocation for people with disabilities, but warned that the continuance of market-driven housing policies does not address critical equality needs.

“The extra €150m for people with disabilities is very welcome but we have to see a breakdown. It is vital that this money is spent wisely, enabling and empowering people with disabilities to live as they wish. The focus must be on supporting people’s autonomy and not on residential care as has all too often been the case.

“However, when it comes to housing, Budget 2019 seems to continue a path that doesn’t serve people with disabilities. Data shows that people with disabilities are disproportionately over-represented in homelessness figures. A continued reliance on private sector housing, focusing on leasing, HAP increases, and incredible tax relief incentives for landlords does nothing to ensure that we create homes that are suited to the needs of people with disabilities.”
